When you start shopping for a laptop, three labels appear again and again: refurbished, second hand and new. They are not interchangeable, and the differences affect how long the laptop lasts, who stands behind it and what you can do if something goes wrong. Here is a plain comparison.
| Refurbished | Second hand | New | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Condition | Tested, cleaned, graded | As is, varies widely | Unused |
| Testing | Done by the seller | Often none | Factory checked |
| Warranty | Seller warranty | Usually none | Manufacturer warranty |
| Software | Fresh Windows install | Previous owner's setup | Factory install |
| Cost | Well below new | Lowest, with the most risk | Highest |
A refurbished laptop is a pre owned machine that a business has inspected, repaired where needed, cleaned and reset before selling it again. The quality of the result depends on the seller's process, which is why a clear grading system and a written warranty matter.
Our A-Grade certified refurbished laptops are function tested across the screen, keyboard, trackpad, ports, Wi-Fi, webcam, speakers, battery charging and storage. They are professionally cleaned, installed with fresh Windows and covered by a 12 month Web Direct warranty (24 months where the product page states it). See our grading and warranty explained page for the detail.
A second hand laptop is simply a used one, usually sold by its previous owner or through an informal listing. Some are in excellent condition, and some are not, and it is hard to tell the difference from photos. There is typically no testing record, no consistent grading and no warranty.
It also helps to know where your legal protection sits. The Consumer Protection Act generally applies to businesses selling in the ordinary course of trade, so a private sale usually leaves you with very little recourse. That is not a criticism of private sellers, only a reason to inspect the laptop in person and to budget for the chance that something needs repair.
A new laptop is unused, sealed and covered by the manufacturer's warranty. You get the latest processors, the longest expected lifespan and the newest features, such as better Wi-Fi and brighter screens. The trade off is the price, since much of a laptop's depreciation happens in the first year or two.
Between refurbished and new sits the ex demo laptop: a recent model that was used for display or demonstration, or returned unused in an opened box. It gives you current generation hardware at a lower cost than new. Our ex demo laptop guide covers when it makes sense.

Both are previously owned, but refurbished laptops have been tested, cleaned, reset and graded by a business that stands behind them with a warranty. A typical second hand laptop is sold as is.
Yes. A business class refurbished laptop with an SSD and at least 8GB of memory handles study, research and online classes comfortably, and the saving can go towards a bag or a monitor.
That depends on the seller. Ours have a 12 month Web Direct warranty, or 24 months where stated, plus 7 day dead on arrival cover.
New laptops carry a manufacturer warranty and no previous wear, but a well tested refurbished laptop with a good seller warranty can be just as dependable for everyday work.
Check the seller's grade definition, the photos of the exact unit and the written warranty. Ours are A-Grade: clean, with light signs of use at most and no cracked screens.
