Mini PC Buying Guide: Small, Fast and Load Shedding Friendly

By Web Direct, refurbished computer specialist in Cape Town since 2002 · Updated October 2026

Mini PCs like the Dell OptiPlex Micro, HP Elite Mini and Lenovo ThinkCentre Tiny deliver full desktop performance in a box smaller than a book, and they use far less power than a tower.

Why choose a mini PC

• Saves desk space; mounts behind a monitor (VESA)
• Low power draw (often 15-65W), ideal on a UPS during load shedding
• Quiet and reliable for offices, reception and point-of-sale
• Business models offer Windows 11 Pro and remote management

What specs to choose

For office work: Intel Core i5 / Ultra 5 or Ryzen 5, 16GB RAM, 256-512GB SSD. For heavier work: i7 and 32GB. Check monitor outputs (two or three displays) and USB-C. Shop mini PCs or business-grade certified refurbished mini PCs.

Frequently asked questions

Are mini PCs as powerful as desktops?
For office and everyday use, yes. They are less suited to heavy gaming or 3D work because there is no room for a full graphics card.

How long can a mini PC run on a UPS?
With a typical 30-40W draw, a 1000VA UPS can run a mini PC and small monitor for roughly 30-60 minutes; longer with an inverter.

Can a mini PC drive two monitors?
Most business mini PCs support two or three displays.
