How to Read Laptop Specs: Processor, RAM, SSD and Screen Explained

Updated 27 October 2026 by the Web Direct team, Diep River, Cape Town.

Laptop listings are full of codes. Here is what matters and what to ignore.

Processor (CPU)

Intel Core i3/i5/i7 and Ryzen 3/5/7 are good, better, best. The generation matters as much as the tier: a 12th-gen Core i5 beats an 8th-gen Core i7. The generation is the first digits of the model number (i5-1245U = 12th gen). Newer Core Ultra chips add an AI engine (NPU) and better battery life. Suffixes: U = efficient, P = balanced, H/HX = high performance.

RAM (memory)

8GB for basic use, 16GB recommended, 32GB+ for engineering, video and heavy multitasking. DDR5 is faster than DDR4.

Storage

Always choose an SSD. NVMe SSDs are faster than SATA SSDs. 256GB is the minimum; 512GB is comfortable.

Screen

Full HD (1920x1080) or WUXGA (1920x1200) is the standard to look for; brightness of 300 nits or more is better for bright rooms. IPS panels have better colours and viewing angles than TN.

Graphics

Integrated graphics are fine for office work. Dedicated NVIDIA RTX graphics are for gaming, 3D, CAD and video editing.
