Home and Small Office Wi-Fi Guide: Mesh, Access Points and Switches

By Web Direct, refurbished computer specialist in Cape Town since 2002 · Updated October 2026

Fibre is fast, but slow Wi-Fi in parts of your home or office can waste it. Here is how to choose the right networking gear.

Fixing Wi-Fi coverage

  • Range extender: cheapest fix for one weak room (extenders).
  • Mesh Wi-Fi (e.g. TP-Link Deco): seamless coverage for a whole house.
  • Wired access points (TP-Link Omada, Ubiquiti UniFi): best performance for offices, schools and large homes.

Building an office network

Use a network switch to connect PCs, printers and access points; a PoE switch powers access points, IP phones and cameras over the network cable. Centrally managed platforms like Ubiquiti UniFi and TP-Link Omada make it easy to manage several access points. For advanced routing, MikroTik is popular with South African ISPs and installers.
