Docking Station Buying Guide: USB-C vs Thunderbolt for Dell, HP and Lenovo

By Web Direct, refurbished computer specialist in Cape Town since 2002 · Updated October 2026

A docking station connects your laptop to monitors, network, keyboard, mouse and power with a single cable. The key is matching the dock to your laptop's port and the screens you want to run.

USB-C vs Thunderbolt

  • USB-C docks (e.g. Dell WD19/WD25): work with most modern laptops; usually support two Full HD or one 4K display.
  • Thunderbolt docks (e.g. Dell WD22TB4, SD25TB4/TB5): more bandwidth for multiple high-resolution monitors and fast storage; need a Thunderbolt laptop.

Check before you buy

  1. Your laptop's port: USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode and Power Delivery, or Thunderbolt.
  2. Charging wattage: the dock should supply at least what your laptop charger does (65W, 90W, 130W).
  3. Number and resolution of monitors.
