Whether you are starting at UCT, Wits, UP, Stellenbosch, UJ or studying online through UNISA, the right laptop depends on your course and budget. Here is what South African students actually need.
Humanities, commerce, law, education and UNISA online study: any modern i5 laptop with 8-16GB RAM. An A-Grade refurbished business laptop is the best value.
Engineering, architecture, design: 16GB+ RAM and a dedicated graphics card for AutoCAD, Revit, SolidWorks or Adobe apps. Consider a mobile workstation or refurbished Dell Precision.
Computer science: 16GB RAM and a fast SSD; a MacBook Air or ThinkPad are popular choices.
Media and film: a MacBook or a laptop with a strong GPU.
New entry-level student laptops are in everyday and student laptops. For the same budget, a refurbished business laptop usually gives a faster processor and tougher build. Load shedding tip: pick a laptop with good battery life and keep a power bank or mini UPS for your Wi-Fi.
How much should a student spend on a laptop in South Africa?
Most students are well served between R6,000 and R15,000. Refurbished business laptops give the most performance in that range.
Is 8GB RAM enough for university?
For most courses yes, but 16GB keeps the laptop fast for longer and is recommended for engineering or design.
Mac or Windows for university?
Both work for most courses. Check your faculty's software list: some engineering and accounting programs are Windows-only.
